Front page of "The White and Blue, Saturday March 6 1880

First launched in October, 1879, this was the first attempt by the ‘Lit’ at publishing a newspaper. The following year it was replaced by the Varsity.

Ellis was Professor of Applied Chemistry in the School of Practical Science and later second dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Sketch was possibly drawn by his good friend, Maurice Hutton,, Principal of University College.

The caption on the drawing, thought to have been done by W. H. Ellis, translates freely as:"Whole of life and free from vice, Maurice needs not sticks and ball".
